Zion Gin repeats: Delta gins cited for safety programs

The Zion Gin Company at Brownsville, Tenn., has been recognized for having the most outstanding safety program in the Southern Cotton Ginners Association for 2002.

“They've won this award three of the past four years,” said Larry Davis, association safety director, who made the presentation at the group's annual meeting at Memphis.

“They do everything they possibly can to implement safety measures and training in order to insure the safest possible work-place for their employees.”

Accepting the award from SCGA President Sledge Taylor were James Wages, Norma Austin, and Danny Jeter.

“Our association conducts a very thorough gin safety program,” Taylor said. “Larry works closely with our member gins and makes available a broad array of training manuals, videos, posters, etc. We're really proud of our safety program and the fine effort our gins have done to provide a safe environment for their workers.”

Honored for having the most improved safety program in the entire association was the Kiech-Shauver Gin Company, Monette, Ark. Accepting the award were Wes Sandusky and Dewayne Couch.

State award winners for most outstanding gin safety programs were Dumas Cotton Co., Dumas, Ark.; Tanner & Co., Frogmore, La.; Columbus Gin Assn., Shaw, Miss.; and Citizens Gin Co., Wardell, Mo.

State winners for the most improved gin safety program were Chase Gin Co., Chase, La.; Silver Creek Gin Co., Holly Bluff, Miss.; Crockett Gin Co., Maury City, Tenn.; and Dalton Cotton Co., Kennett, Mo.

Special recognition awards for those scoring 94 percent or above on their gin safety audit were Cotton Growers Gin, Dell, Ark.; TASCO Gin, Joiner, Ark.; McClendon, Mann & Felton Gin, Marianna, Ark.; McGehee Producers Gin, McGehee, Ark.; Pendleton Gin Co., Dumas, Ark.

Tri-Parish Gin Co., Lettsworth, La.; South Franklin Gin Co., Wisner, La.; McNutt Gin Co., Boyce, La.; A.C. Riley Co., New Madrid, Mo.; Union Gin Co., Brownsville, Tenn.; Phoenix Gin Co., Tiptonville, Tenn.
