Besides exports to China, which have been 10 years in the making, U.S. rice industry leaders are pursuing market opportunities in Iraq, Cuba and Mexico.
Of the three only Mexico is operating at full potential as the No. 1 market for U.S. rice, and the continued success there continues to be the subject of presidential threats to end the North American Free Trade Agreement.
Bob Cummings, chief operating officer for the USA Rice Federation, discussed the prospects for all three in a presentation to producers attending the Horizon Ag Field Day at the Mark Wimpy Farm near Jonesboro, Ark.
