Greens growers have early deadline to sign up for disaster assistance

FOR MOST alternative crops, the signup deadline for non-insured crop disaster assistance is Feb. 28, 2003. But, for spring greens growers, the deadline is Jan. 1, 2003. The administrative fee of $100 per crop not to exceed $300 per county is due on that date.

“If greens growers do not sign up and pay their fees by Jan. 1, they will not be covered,” says Henry English, director of the Small Farm Program at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB).

The Non-insured crop disaster Assistance Program (NAP) provides protection in times of natural disaster. It is a voluntary program that covers non-insurable crop losses and planting prevented by disaster.

NAP covers farmers growing fruit and vegetable crops and crops for livestock feed. Eligible crops include vegetables, nuts, forages and other commercial crops produced for food and fiber for which catastrophic level of crop insurance is unavailable The deadline for other alternative crops, including okra, sweet potatoes and watermelon is Feb. 28.

Those eligible are landowners or tenants who share the risk of producing an eligible crop.

For additional information or help in signing up, contact the UAPB Small Farm Program at 870-575-7226, a UAPB small farm advisor (Extension associate) or a local FSA office.
