Monitor cotton square retention for insecticide effectiveness

“Generally, I stop monitoring cotton square retention at first bloom, but this year we’re telling our consultants this year to continue monitoring on into bloom a while, until the adult migration is over," says Angus Catchot, Mississippi Extension entomologist.

This year, he says, the big plant bug migration has been later than usual.

And he says, don't assume on the basis of sweep net numbers alone that an insecticide isn't working. "Actually, the product may be working pretty well. The only way you can really tell is to look at square retention."
