Cochran to keynote Delta Council annual meeting

MISSISSIPPI'S SENIOR senator and one of the foremost experts on U.S. farm policy will be the keynote speaker at this year's Delta Council annual meeting at Delta State University May 24.

“We are pleased that Sen. Thad Cochran will address our 67th annual meeting,” said Delta Council President Ben Lamensdorf. “There has not been an elected official in my lifetime who has made a bigger impact on the future of the Mississippi Delta than Sen. Cochran. He has positively touched every aspect of the economy and well-being of our region, and, as someone who is so familiar with the strengths and challenges we face in the Delta, his keynote address should have special meaning this year.”

A featured guest at many Delta Council Annual Meetings over the years, Cochran will give his second keynote address — the first coming in 1992. Born in Pontotoc and a graduate of the University of Mississippi, Cochran was elected to the U. S. Senate in 1978. Previously, he served three terms as a United States Congressman. He is married to the former Rose Clayton, and they have two children.

Sen. Cochran serves on the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee, the Appropriations Committee, and the Governmental Affairs Committee. He is the ranking member of the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee.

“Most everyone in Mississippi and across the Nation knows what an effective senator Thad Cochran is, and those of us in the Delta know the impact he has had on our region, especially on issues concerning agriculture, conservation, and water resource projects,” said Lamensdorf. “However, what a lot of people don't know is the impact he has on all issues that effect our region and State.”

Lamensdorf, a farmer from Cary, Miss., pointed out a few of a multitude of projects that have Thad Cochran's imprint: the Delta State Education Initiative, new aquaculture and biological control facilities in Stoneville, the Delta Regional Authority, the Wetlands Reserve Program, the Delta Health Alliance, and the Delta Center for Manufacturing Technology.

Cochran will join a list of noted speakers who have keynoted the organization's annual meeting from the fields of business, literature, public policy and science. The Delta Council annual meeting will be held in Delta State's Bologna Performing Arts Center at 10:00 a.m. A catfish luncheon at noon will conclude the day's events.
