The U.S. Department of Justice and USDA held their first-ever joint public workshop on competition and regulatory issues in the agriculture industry, March 12. The workshop, which was held in Ankeny, Iowa, attracted more than 800 persons, including farmers from as far away as New York and Alabama. In a briefing for reporters attending the workshop, Christine Varney, head of the DOJ’s Antitrust Division, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Attorney General Eric Holder discussed their position on the issue of competitiveness in U.S. agriculture.
