As a soil scientist, Rachel Stout Evans has taken core samples from fields from all over the Deltas of Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana. Too often, the distinguishing feature of the samples is a compaction layer 4 to 5 inches below the surface. That means growers often are growing crops in a 4-inch flower pot, as she explained in a presentation at the Arkansas Soil & Water Education Conference in Jonesboro, Ark.
