Molecular markers positioning rice for another leap forward

While some continue to debate the issues, leading scientists say the changing climate will require new varieties for crops like rice to help producers cope with evolving pests and diseases and infrastructure alterations.

Susan McCouch, a Cornell University scientist who helped provide the first molecular map of the rice plant, talked about those changes and their potential impact at a presentation at the LSU AgCenter’s H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station’s annual field day.

Dr. McCouch, a professor in the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics at Cornell, said well-established rice breeding programs such as the one led by Dr. Steve Linscombe at the Caffey Rice Research Station will help bring those much-needed new varieties to fruition.
