Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Mycogen Seeds, Triumph Seed Company and Midwest Seed Genetics have chosen Cruiser as their exclusive sorghum seed treatment insecticide beginning in 2003. Cruiser protects sorghum plants from a broad spectrum of seed, soil and foliar insects, including chinch bug, seed corn maggot, greenbug, yellow surgarcane aphid, wireworm and corn leaf aphid.
It also is registered for use on corn, cotton, barley and wheat.
Pioneer Hi-Bred International began conducting extensive in-house evaluations in 1999 and has tested Cruiser for the past two years across a wide geography. “The clear advantages to Cruiser are that it reduces the seed load rate by 36 percent, it shows less severity on the seed, it has greater water solubility for better efficacy under dryland conditions, and it offers superior protection against targeted insects,” said Clive Holland, sorghum product manager with Pioneer Hi-Bred International.
“We decided to offer Cruiser because our customers were requesting it and because it has better seed safety,” said Ed Nimtz with Mycogen Seeds. “Going into the 2003 planting season, not only will we be supplying our customers what they are asking for, but we'll also be helping them achieve better performance in the field, which, hopefully, results in better yields.”
Commercially applied, Cruiser greatly reduces the producer's exposure to insecticides at planting and eliminates the labor and handling involved in applying a separate insecticide. Cruiser also is applied at a much lower rate than competitive treatments. This translates into reduced seed loading rates, which leads to less active ingredient applied per seed. Lower loading rates also result in improved seed safety and potentially improved corn plant stands.
“After just two years of commercial use, Cruiser has proven that it provides excellent performance in the field and delivers good seed safety and convenience,” said Mark Jirak, Syngenta Seed Treatment crop manager. “We are excited that more seed companies are recognizing these advantages and look forward to the growing opportunity to bring value to additional sorghum growers.”
Cruiser-treated sorghum seed also is available from Sorghum Partners and Croplan Genetics.
