Weed control, disease management on agenda for April 2 peanut meeting

Tactics to cope with weeds and disease are on the agenda for the Peanut Preplant meeting to be held April 2 at Black River Technical College in Pocahontas, Ark.

The meeting, set for the Continuing Education Building, Room 113, begins at noon and includes lunch. Peanuts have undergone a significant growth spurt in acreage in Arkansas, going from 600 acres in 2010 to about 18,000 acres in 2012.

“We’re all going through a big learning curve with this crop in Arkansas,” said Mike Andrews, Randolph County Extension staff chair. “Meetings like this are an opportunity for our growers to learn how to deal with issues such as peanut diseases and weed control.”

The agenda includes:

  • Pre-plant and early-post-planting weed control -- Bob Scott, Extension weed scientist.
  • Early disease management -- Travis Faske, extension plant pathologist.

Also on the agenda are Parker Williams of Southland Irrigation and Gordon Drennan, Clint Williams Co.
