AS PART of a joint agreement between the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) Aquaculture/Fisheries Center and Arkansas State University (ASU) at Newport, a fish diagnostic laboratory will be opened on the ASU-Newport campus. This brings to four the number of UAPB fish disease diagnostic labs in Arkansas.
Other labs are in Pine Bluff, Lake Village and Lonoke.
The laboratory in Newport will analyze water and fish samples to diagnose fish disease and water quality problems.
The laboratory will be staffed by George Selden, a UAPB Aquaculture-Fisheries Center Extension specialist, who will be responsible for developing and implementing educational programs in support of the aquaculture industry in northeast Arkansas.
The agreement also provides for the two universities to set up a framework for students to take course work for an associate degree at ASU-Newport that would prepare them for continued study toward an aquaculture and fisheries bachelor's degree from UAPB.
