FARMERS CAN get a first-hand look at new Enhanced Roundup Ready and Bollgard II cotton varieties at the Centers of Excellence Technology Farm Tour at Allendale Planting Co. and K&G Farms near Shelby, Miss., on Aug. 13.
The next generation of Roundup Ready and Bollgard cotton varieties has been receiving a lot of attention in the agricultural media, but few farmers have been able to get a close-up look at them.
“This field day will highlight the new Enhanced Roundup Ready varieties that can be sprayed with Roundup Ultra over the top at virtually any time and at different rates,” said Anthony Mills, field day coordinator for Monsanto. “The Enhanced will be adjacent to regular Roundup Ready so that farmers can compare the two systems.”
Monsanto will also be showcasing its Bollgard II cotton technology, in this case, in a stacked gene 33B RR variety. “We have been artificially infesting this trial with different worm species to show the control obtained with the advanced Bollgard genes,” said Mills.
Ken Croon and Rob Ihrig of Monsanto will be on hand to discuss the Enhanced Roundup Ready cotton and Walt Mullins of Monsanto and Blake Layton, Extension entomologist with Mississippi State University, will discuss the Bollgard II variety.
Other presentations at the Centers of Excellence Field Day will include:
- Economics and Soil Conservation Effects of No-Till Cotton, Mills. Bill O'Neal, manager with K&G Farms; and Will McCarty, Extension cotton specialist, Mississippi State University.
- The Bollgard/Roundup Ready System — How does it compare to the old way? Greg Ferguson and John Bradley, Monsanto.
- Economics of YieldGard and Roundup Ready Corn. Angus Catchot, Monsanto, and Don Parker, Extension entomologist with Mississippi State University.
Several new Roundup Ready soybean, Roundup Ready cotton and stacked-gene cotton varieties will be signed for viewing by farmers attending the farm tour, which will begin 9 a.m. at the big tent along the old U.S. Highway 61 at the north end of Shelby, Miss.
